La Mesa police are investigating a shooting Monday afternoon that left a man injured.

Police responded to a report of shots fired around 4 p.m. near apartments on Williamsburg Lane near El Cajon Boulevard and found a man in his 20s suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body, said police Lt. Travis Higgins.

The victim was “alert and conscious” and rushed to a hospital with an injury not thought to be life-threatening, he said.

Higgins said two males believed to be in their late teens or early 20s who were wearing masks ran off after the shooting. At least one of the suspects was armed, Higgins said.

A police helicopter helped to look for the suspects Monday afternoon, but they weren’t located. It was unclear what led up to the shooting.

“We believe the parties knew each other or knew of each other, so it wasn’t a random act,” Higgins said. He said the exact relationship between the victim and suspects was still under investigation.

Anyone with information about the shooting was asked to call La Mesa police or San Diego Crime Stoppers’ anonymous tip line at 888-580-8477.
