PHOENIX (AZFamily) — An armed suspect is in the hospital after being shot by Glendale police officers in Phoenix on Tuesday morning.
According to Jose Santiago, a public information officer with the department, Glendale PD detectives were actively investigating a suspect wanted for aggravated assault in a domestic violence case.
Santiago says detectives had been surveilling the suspect for days and tracked him to the area of 29th Avenue and McDowell Road just before 10 a.m. As officers tried to contact the suspect, he took off and began running in the area.
As police were chasing the man, Santiago says the suspect pulled out a handgun and pointed it at officers. That’s when the man was shot by police, but it’s unclear how many officers fired their weapons.
The suspect, a Hispanic man in his 40s, was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. No Glendale officers or detectives were hurt in the incident.
Arizona’s Family witnessed numerous unmarked law enforcement vehicles, along with Glendale and Phoenix police patrol SUVs. Crime scene tape was set up along McDowell Road.
