Lighten up and let go this year with help from etiquette expert Diane Gottsman.
Things to Let Go of in 2026
Instead of making resolutions that won’t last, focus on creating a calmer, more welcoming home. When we clear out what no longer serves us, we make space for a happier, more peaceful environment.
“Maybe Someday” Items
Old spices, unused gift bags, clothes that no longer fit, expired pantry goods, outdated meds, and makeup you never wear—clear them out to free physical and emotional space.
Worn Out Anything
Discard worn, outdated sleepwear and clothing you haven’t touched in years. If you forgot it last season, you won’t miss it now.
Promotional Swag
Let go of name tags, logo bottles, neon sunglasses, and other freebies you’ll never truly use.
Gifts with Purchase
If the bonus items from a purchase only clutter your counters and drawers, it’s time to donate or discard them.
Instruction Manuals
Most instructions are online now. Get rid of manuals for items you no longer own.
Random Cables
Outdated chargers, mystery cords, and gimmicky tech accessories can go. If you haven’t used them in years, you won’t.
Coffee Mugs
Keep your favorites. Box the rest and donate them if you don’t miss them.
Books
Release books you’ll never read, duplicates, old magazines, and unused cookbooks. Keep only the meaningful or decorative ones.
More to Let Go of in 2026:
Scraps of wrapping paper
Greeting cards without envelopes
Duplicate kitchen gadgets
Torn or unused bedsheets
Toys and games no longer played with
Unused beach totes
