SAN ANTONIO, Texas — U.S. Route 90 in San Antonio is going to receive a huge expansion in two different phases, according to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).

The first phase will stretch from I-410 to Loop 1604, while the second phase will be from Loop 1604 to SH 211. The total length of the projects is 7.6 miles and will both have different start and end dates, according to the TxDOT website.

Phase one will consist of the widening of U.S. 90 to three, 12-foot-wide lanes, a two-lane flyover from U.S. 90 to Loop 1604, a roundabout at Ray Ellison Boulevard for better traffic flow and auxiliary lanes in certain locations throughout the expansion.

Phase two will again widen the lanes to 12 feet, adding two to three frontage road lanes, various auxiliary lanes, westbound-to-eastbound turnaround at the U.S. 90/SH 211 intersection and eastbound-to-westbound turnaround bridges along U.S. 90 at Loop 1604 and Montgomery Road.

According to the TxDOT website, the funding has been secured for phase one, which is $146 million. The second phase, which has partial securing, will be totaled out to $339 million.

Construction for both projects could last until 2030 and 2032, respectively. There is not a concrete deadline that TxDOT has for the completion of the projects.
