Around NYC
1. City’s only federal jail notorious for bad conditions
The city’s only federal jail got another high-profile occupant on Tuesday: Daniel Hernandez, known as the rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine.
He joins a long list of high-profile detainees at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC). From Sean “Diddy” Combs to Luigi Mangione, the facility also now houses the ousted Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife.
MDC has long been plagued by problems and claims of horrific conditions, as seen in exclusive video NY1 obtained in 2024 from detainees inside.
2. Thousands of New Yorkers start new year with higher healthcare costs
Millions of Americans — thousands of them in the city — are facing much higher health care costs this year with the expiration of federal subsidies to the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare.
The change affects Americans who don’t get their health insurance from an employer and don’t qualify for Medicaid or Medicare. Experts at the Community Service Society of New York say state health data shows nearly 43,000 New York State residents are facing a premium increase starting this month.
3. After Citi Bike raises price for fifth year, calls for city to subsidize it grow
The price of a Citi Bike annual membership jumped 9% this month, and some members didn’t even know.
“I think all cities benefit from more bikes on the roads and fewer cars,” rider Max Buckner said. “So I don’t see any reason that we should be discouraging that. That seems dumb to me.”
Riders think the new mayor, who ran on free buses, should also do something about the cost of biking.
