PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Valley underage teens can now take a ride in a Waymo without having their parents around.
The Mountain View, California-based company announced on Tuesday that kids ages 14-17 can have their own accounts that are linked to their parents and ride the autonomous cars in the 315 square miles that are covered by Wamo in the Valley.
Teen riders can share their trip status with their parents or guardians, who receive all the ride receipts. The kids can travel on their own while their parents stay informed about where their kids are.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the risk of car crashes is higher among teens 16-19 than any other age group. Waymo hopes this new initiative will cut down on that. “By leveraging advanced technology to directly address these dangers, Waymo is creating a safer path for teens to gain independence while giving parents and caregivers greater peace of mind,” Scott Myers, executive director of Students Against Destructive Decisions, said in a statement.
Waymo has more than 1,500 driverless cars operating in Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Austin, Texas.
