NEW YORK (WABC) — The New York City Council is voting to elect its next speaker on Tuesday afternoon and they are expected to choose Julie Menin.
Menin, a moderate from the Upper East Side, will be the council’s first Jewish speaker. She is the daughter of a Holocaust survivor.
One of the first jobs of the new speaker is to decide whether to override 19 vetoes that former Mayor Eric Adams issued on his last day in office.
Menin previously announced she has the support of 40 out of 51 council members.
Menin has previously vowed to work with the mayor on shared priorities, like child care and affordability, but she will serve as a check on the mayor, specifically on the most left-leaning aspects of his agenda.
