Corporation for Public Broadcasting closing its doors

  • January 8, 2026

WI (WEAU) – The Corporation for Public Broadcasting is closing its doors.

On Monday the CPB’s Board of Directors announced it voted in favor of dissolving the organization following Congress’ decision to end its federal financial backing.

CPB officials considered placing itself in hibernation – just in case Congress decided to restore its appropriations.

However, that move was rejected according to the CPB’s President and CEO who said doing so could create quote “political manipulation or misuse.”

CPB made its debut in 1968 and funded PBS, NPR and hundreds of radio and television stations across the nation over the decades.

Wisconsin Public Media released the following statement Wednesday:

While we are disappointed by the end of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, this news wasn’t unexpected following last year’s rescission of federal funding for public broadcasting. The end of that funding – and the end of the CPB – will affect Wisconsin Public Radio and PBS Wisconsin, but our services are not ending.
