Dallas police are searching for four masked gunmen who killed two men in a shopping center parking lot two years ago.
The December 2023 double murder at Saint Augustine and Scyene Road in East Dallas remains unsolved despite clear surveillance images.
The shooting occurred around 9:15 a.m. on December 27, 2023. Four masked suspects emerged from a red Nissan Sentra and opened fire in broad daylight.
“A red Nissan Sentra enters the parking lot from Saint Augustine traveling westbound,” Detective Fernando Silva with the Dallas Police Department, told Fox 4 KDFW. “Pulled into the parking lot and four masked and covered up suspects exit the vehicle and begin shooting.”
Jemarcus Irving appeared to be the intended target.
Morland Smith, the second victim, was simply in the wrong place.
“Review of the video and talking to witnesses, it was pretty clear that Morland Smith was not the target. And it looked like Jemarcus may have been the target,” Silva said. “At that point, the suspects retreat back into their vehicle and then exit the shopping center and then continue going westbound on Scyene.”
Police released surveillance photos showing the suspects’ clothing and physical builds. The images capture their shoes, pants, and hoodies clearly enough for potential identification.
Stephanie Smith continues seeking justice for her brother, Morland. She remembers him as a quiet, laid-back person who avoided trouble.
“Morland was laid back. He was quiet. He would joke a lot. He’s never really got into any trouble or nothing like that,” she said, per Fox 4.
Detective Silva believes someone recognizes the suspects from the photos.
“You can see clothing, the style of the shoes, the pants, and the hoodies that they’re wearing. Kind of gauge their height and weight, a little bit of a physical description as well,” he said.
The victim’s sister pleaded for witnesses to come forward.
“If you know something, please say something because people say it all the time. Because you could be in this position and somebody you know and hold back information,” she said.
