Auckland is typically one of the highest level pre-Australian Open events on the WTA side, and while this year’s draw doesn’t really feature any of the top players the tournament has once again provided some excellent tennis so far and it will have a very interesting quarterfinal lineup this Thursday, with several players with legitimate ambitions of taking the trophy home.

WTA Auckland Quarterfinal Predictions
Xinyu Wang vs Francesca Jones

Head-to-head: first meeting

They actually met once previously, at the Wimbledon girls’ event back in 2017, with Wang prevailing in a tough three-setter. Neither player went on to have massive success at the Tour level, but they have forged respectable careers and are still young and looking to reach new heights. A semifinal here (and potentially more) would be a massive result for either of them–so both are sure to give it their all in what should be an extremely close match.
Prediction: Jones in 3

Magda Linette vs Alexandra Eala

Head-to-head: Linette 2-0 Eala

Ranking-wise, the two players couldn’t be any closer, with #52 taking on #53. However, their two previous matchups were dominated by Linette, who definitely has at least the mental edge going in. That said, Eala is 13 years younger, rapidly improving, and is likely to reach much higher heights than Linette in her career. Finally getting a win in this matchup would be a great way to show she is ready for a big 2026.

Iva Jovic vs Sofia Costoulas

Head-to-head: first meeting

Both players are young and have potential, but Jovic is already far ahead and clearly seems to have a far higher ceiling going forward. She will almost certainly be seeded at the Australian Open and has an excellent chance to fight for the title here in Auckland and gain some vital confidence and momentum ahead of the first Slam of the year.
Prediction: Jovic in 2

Elina Svitolina vs Sonay Kartal

Head-to-head: first meeting/Svitolina 1-0 Kartal

As the #1 seed and by far the highest ranked player remaining in the draw, Svitolina is the favorite to win this title, and if she maintains the level she has shown thus far this week she might well do just that. Given the stage of the tournament we are in, she has a very favorable draw here and will be the favorite to go all the way.
Prediction: Svitolina in 2
