A suspect is in custody after a female was assaulted in an unprovoked attack in Vaughan last month, York Regional Police say.

According to police, on Dec. 23 at around 6 p.m., officers were called to a plaza parking lot near Maple Smith Way and Interchange Way for reports of an assault.

Police said a female was walking in the area when she was approached from behind by a suspect, who assaulted her with an unknown object.

The suspect, police said, fled the area in a white Mercedes sedan. The victim was treated for minor injuries, investigators added.

On Jan. 7, a suspect was arrested in connection with the random attack, police said.

Alexandros Jorge Acosta, 28, of Toronto, has been charged with assault with a weapon and operation while prohibited.
