Any time is a good time to start prioritizing your health — not just at the beginning of the year. Luckily, San Antonio has a bunch of options for workin on your fitness, whether you’re looking to bulk up or slim down.
The city also boasts a wealth of healthy eating options and sober “third spaces” to avoid drinking alcohol while still enjoying leaving the house to socialize.
Let’s take a look at all the options for getting healthy in the Alamo City this year.

Take a barre class
Barre is one of the best ways to get a total body workout. The Alamo City has several options for getting your sweat on with this ballet-inspired fitness program, including Pure Barre, which has locations in Alamo Heights, Huebner Commons and Stone Oak.

Prioritize Protein
The fitness world seems obsessed right now with packing on the protein in each meal to maximize gains and build muscle. As a result, healthy eateries in town are putting protein center stage. Protein House, which opened in April at 12016 Alamo Ranch Parkway, offers a menu of protein-focused salads, protein pancakes, shakes and acai bowls.

Try going dry
Several establishments in town offer menus of inventive mocktails, including Estate Coffee Co., 1320 E. Houston St., which has an Espresso Old Fashioned, Cold Brew Shandy and a lime espresso tonic.

Explore San Antonio’s hiking trails
Friedrich Wilderness Park, a local fave for its wild nature, has about ten miles of hiking trails of varying difficulties, and includes steep hills and deep canyons. Government Canyon just outside of the city also offers a true nature hike (with some bonus dinosaur tracks).

Start training for the San Antonio Marathon
In 2025, San Antonio replaced the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon with its own, in a bid to compete with other cities as a Boston Marathon qualifier. The 2026 San Antonio Marathon is scheduled for the weekend of December 4, meaning you have plenty of time to train up to run the 5k, half or full marathon if you start now.

Join a running club
In addition to now having its own marathon, San Antonio has also seen a huge boom in running clubs. Combined, they make for what former Ron Nirenberg called a true “running culture” developing in the Alamo City. Clubs like Dreamers Run Club, Downtown Run Group, Golden Hour Run Club, Coffee Run Club, Mission City Running, and many more offer a chance at building community and making fitness-minded friends while you collectively get your sweat on.

Take an outdoor yoga class with Mobile Om
Mobile Om’s motto is “yoga without bounds,” and in practice, it’s just like it sounds — mobile yoga classes in unconventional outdoor spaces. One of those boundless studios is on top of the Hays Street Bridge overlooking the downtown skyline, where Mobile Om got its start, but the roving studio offers classes at other classic SA locations including Confluence Park and the Mission Marquee Plaza.

Run, bike or walk the Mission Reach
Mission Reach is a popular destination for kayakers, pedestrians and bikers alike. Because a lot of the trail is located a fair distance from the road, it’s a good place for people who aren’t experienced with riding near or on the street, and it’s plenty walkable, too. The route is more scenic than challenging anyway, so if you’re into rough and tough terrain and heart-pumping inclines on an isolated path in nature, Mission Reach probably isn’t for you. If you’re into paved paths and mostly gentle slopes with a beautiful view of the historic missions, you’ll love the Mission Reach. Photo via Instagram / timd_satx

Try high intensity interval training
HIIT workouts, or high intensity interval training, are for getting your heart rate elevated with short bursts of intense exercise with minimal breaks. Chains such as Orange Theory Fitness have several locations throughout the Alamo City, including at Quarry Village. Orange Theory Fitness, 20 E Basse Rd suite 320-107, orangetheory.com.

Replace tacos with an açai bowl
Açai is a small purple berry from the Amazon rainforest that is loaded with antioxidants and fiber and is considered a “superfood.” Açai bowls are all the rage simply because they’re both delicious and packed with nutrients to fuel your body all day long. Rise Up Açai Bowls, Acai & Maca Inc., Just Smash ‘Em, Revolucion, and Playa Bowls are just a few of the local options for the healthy dish.

Meditate to destress
Stress can increase cortisol levels, which is directly related to weight gain. While you’re working on your exterior, it might be counter-productive to neglect the interior. San Antonio has a lot of meditation centers for finding your zen, including San Antonio Zen Center, pictured here, located at 417 W Woodlawn Ave.

Lift heavy
Lifting heavy isn’t just for guys — studies show it’s beneficial for women and men, especially since after you lift, your body turns into a calorie-burning furnace.
