SAN MARCOS – Cold and flu season was never more evident than Friday night at Mission Hills High School.

The Grizzlies were playing without starter Mykah Simmons, who was home sick.

Torrey Pines was in worse shape, playing without sick starters Jaylam Vigil, who averages 11.5 points a game, and Harris Notrica. Plus, sharpshooter Zander Ovies is out for the season with a knee injury.

And head coach John Olive was sick and missed his second straight game with Jake Gilliam filling in.

In what turned out to be a slugfest, Torrey Pines overcame an early deficit and huing on for a  43-41 nonleague win.

“We had guys playing different roles, but every team has guys sick this time of year,” Gilliam said.

Sophomore Lucas Albright came up from the JV team, started and scored five points with three rebounds and a pair of blocks.

Tavaris Green of No. 7-ranked Torrey Pines (9-8) scored 15 points and had seven rebounds. Brady Clark added 10.

Vincnt Giglio led Mission Hills (9-9) with 21 points. Jake Van Der Vorste added 10 points and nine rebounds.

Torrey Pines cut the deficit to 21-17 at the half as Tevaris Green hit a pair of 3-point shots.

After falling behind by six, the Falcons were within one at 34-33 at the end of three quarters as Brady Clark scored eight, including two 3-pointers, and Green had a steal and layin at the buzzer.

Mission Hills turned the ball over six times in the quarter

Torrey Pines took its first lead since 3-0 at the start of he fourth quarter and led 38-35 on a 3-pointer by Ari Krasniqui, his first points of the game, with 2:36 to play and he followed seconds later to push the advantage to six.

Logan Vergenz of Mission Hills answered with a 3-pointer with 1:39 to play.

A Green basket had the Torrey Pines lead back to four with 1:10 to play. Mission Hills then turned the ball over, its fourth of the quarter, and 10th of the second half.

But Torrey Pines gave the ball right back and Jake Van Der Vorste had a rebound and putback basket for Mission Hills with 13 seconds to play, making it 43-41 Torrey Pines. Green missed two free throws, but Van Der Vorste’ s corner 3-pointer at the buzzer bounced off the rim.

Torrey Pines started the season 3-6, but was 5-2 since then. The two losses were DeMatha of  Maryland, ranked No. 71 in the country, and North Oconee of Georgia, ranked No. 18.The Falcons had wins over Francis Parker, ranked No. 5 in San Diego, and St. Augustine, ranked No. 10.

Mission Hills started the season 5-2, then went 4-6.

The Grizzlies lost to Sacramento Destiny Christian, ranked No. 51 in California, to El Dorado, ranked No. 117 in the nation, La Habra Sonora, ranked No. 115 and Sky Ridge, ranked No. 11 in Utah.
