Moscow based telecommunications provider MTS has announced its intention to replace network routers from foreign manufacturers with its own in-house developed systems.

Global networking equipment providers have left Russia in droves since it moved into Ukraine in 2022.

In the case of the world’s largest networking equipment provider Cisco Systems, in early 2023 its local subsidiary destroyed an estimated US$23 million of its own equipment before leaving to prevent it from falling into Russian hands.

MTS says it has developed its own BRAS (Broadband Remote Access Server) and BNG (Broadband Network Gateway) service routers for managing and aggregating fixed internet user traffic.

BRAS or BNG equipment operates at the junction of a backbone network and a broadband fixed access network, authorising and routing user traffic.

According to MTS, its own equipment has already passed certification and testing in four regions of Russia, and will soon launch in ten more regions across the country.

“It is most difficult to find a replacement for such equipment, since it requires little on the network, and the supply on the market is limited,” said Viktor Perov, director of the Department of Regional Transport and Corporate Customer Networks at MTS.

“As a result, we decided to create the device on our own, gathering a strong expert team of our own and attracted specialists.

“We took as a basis the idea of writing software that can be installed on any available x86 server hardware, so as not to be tied to a specific hardware supplier.”

Perov said MTS is currently focused on expanding functionality, debugging the software, and scaling its solution to various regions of Russia.
