Salina, N.Y. – A more than 13-hour standoff in Salina ended early Saturday when deputies broke into a home and took a man into custody.

A male stabbed Friday afternoon at the home at 543 Sunflower Dr. has died, according to Thomas Newton, a spokesperson for the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies breached the home at about 5 a.m. Saturday and took the suspect into custody, Newton said. He was found hiding in the attic, he said.

The suspect is being treated for injuries. Deputies did not at this time release the suspect’s name or say if he has been charged.

The standoff started at 3:41 p.m. Friday when deputies were called to the home where they found the victim with stab wounds to his neck.

The victim was transported to Upstate University Hospital in critical condition, but he later died.

The suspect wanted in the stabbing barricaded himself in the home and refused to come out of the house, Newton said.

Scores of deputies, police and firefighters responded to the standoff. Homes nearby were evacuated, neighbors said.

The sheriff’s SWAT team arrived and negotiations were attempted with the suspect.

The suspect during the night set fires at the home, Newton said. Firefighters, protected by SWAT members, keep working to put out the fires, he said.

The home was badly damaged, Newton said.

At one point before 11 p.m., multiple flash bangs could be heard.

The standoff ended when deputies broke into the house and took the suspect into custody early Saturday.
