HOUSTON – Authorities are responding to a fatal vehicle fire on I-610 near Mykawa Road on Saturday morning.

The Houston Police Department said a single-vehicle crash happened around 2 a.m. after a white pickup truck with three occupants crashed on a feeder road.

Through their initial investigation, police said the truck was driving at a high rate of speed before the driver lost control and crashed into freeway signage. Police said the high-speed impact caused the vehicle to ignite.

HPD Sgt. Mike Barrow said a Good Samaritan driving by stopped and rescued the driver from the vehicle, but the two other passengers died at the scene. Police said the passengers were a man and woman, both 18 years old.

The HPD Vehicular Crimes Division is investigating what led up to the crash, including if impairment was a factor.

The Texas Department of Transportation is on scene to make repairs to the damaged signage.

Lanes will be closed for the next several hours as crews work to clear the scene.
