Arlene Simpson
OBITUARY
Arlene Palmer Simpson passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, in San Diego on December 28th. She was 95.
Born in Frazee, Minnesota, Arlene grew up on a dairy farm. In her early 20s, she moved to San Diego, where she quickly fell in love with the sun and the sea.
Arlene met her future husband, Bob Simpson, while working at Ryan Aeronautical. They married in 1955 and shared 50 years together until Bob’s passing in 2005.
An avid athlete and adventurer, Arlene learned to swim and sail, later becoming a nationally recognized Sabot sailor. She also loved skiing, hiking, and golfing (scoring two hole-in-ones), in addition to traveling.
Arlene was deeply devoted to her family and community. She was a passionate advocate for Balboa Park, the San Diego Zoo, and the Maritime Museum.
She is survived by her children Julia Montgomery (Jim), Gwen Mathews (Gary), and Jay Simpson (Patricia); six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Arlene’s caregiver, Maria Beaza, for her compassionate and devoted care.
A celebration of life will be held on January 31st at the Point Loma Community Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Forever Balboa Park, the San Diego Zoo, or the Maritime Museum.
