SAN ANTONIO — Some local seniors with limited mobility say they feel trapped in their own homes after reoccurring problems with the elevators at their mid-rise apartment building.

Victoria Plaza Apartments is a nine-story building on Barrera and Catherine Streets just south and east of downtown near the Alamodome.

It’s home to nearly 200 low-income renters and seniors with limited mobility. The building only has two elevators.

Renters there say one of them is completely out of service and the other one breaks down several times a week, for hours at a time.

News 4 San Antonio has confirmed the San Antonio Fire Department has responded to seven emergency calls within the past year related to elevators at Victoria Plaza. In three of those cases renters had to be rescued from the elevators.

Opportunity Home San Antonio manages the property. Renters say they’ve tried without success to have property managers address their concerns.

We are working to get answers on this still developing story including:

  • What will the housing authority do to address problems with the elevators and how long will it take?
  • We’re also checking in with city code compliance to uncover the record of violation notices issued?
  • Is district Councilwoman Sukh Kaur working with renters to help alleviate problems that have plagued them?

We’ll continue to work to get answers on this story and others.
