Harris County K-9 back on duty, week after suspect tries to drown him

  • January 13, 2026

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – A Harris County Sheriff’s Office K-9 is back on duty, a week after a suspect tried to drown him during a pursuit.

K-9 Ghost returned to work seven days after the incident. Officials say he made a full recovery.

It happened on Jan. 5 when deputies were looking for Bryan Crofton, 21, who they said had active felony warrants.

After Crofton was spotted, he crashed his vehicle into a ditch and attempted to flee on foot.

Welcome back, K9 Ghost!!
After a courageous pursuit through chest-deep water last week, Ghost helped capture a suspect who allegedly tried to drown him. His bravery and resilience are exactly why these four-legged heroes are invaluable to our team. 🐾💙 pic.twitter.com/UvBUc9bCMP

K-9 Ghost, along with K-9 Handler, Deputy Almeida, pursued Crofton towards a pond in a wooded area.

When K-9 Ghost bit Crofton, authorities say Crofton tried to drown Ghost in the chest-deep water.

The sheriff’s office says deputies were able to detain Crofton. K-9 Ghost was found unconscious, but shortly afterwards regained consciousness and was treated at the scene before being transported to a veterinary clinic as a precaution.

Crofton was taken to a hospital for the bite he received. He had open warrants for injury to a child as well as interfering with 911 services. New charges of evading arrest and interfering with a service animal were added against him.
