The closures are part of Macy’s “Bold New Chapter” initiative, a turnaround plan announced in 2024 that included closing about 150 underperforming stores by 2026.

LA MESA, Calif. — Macy’s is set to shutter more than a dozen stores in 2026 as the department store chain takes a much leaner portfolio.

The closures are part of a wider initiative called “Bold New Chapter,” a turnaround plan announced in 2024 that included closing about 150 underperforming stores over three years while re-investing in other locations. Last year, the retailer closed 66 stores.

In the most recent planned closures of 14 stores, 2 are located in California, including the Grossmont Center location in La Mesa.

There is no specific date set for the closing of the San Diego County location on Macy’s website, only stating that the Grossmont Center location is “closing soon.”

“In executing our strategy, we continue to review our portfolio and make careful decisions about where and how we invest, including closing underproductive stores and streamlining operations. These decisions are not made lightly,” Macy’s CEO Tony Spring said in a statement shared on Wednesday. “We communicated directly with affected colleagues first and are providing support, including transfer opportunities where available, as well as severance and outplacement resources where applicable. We thank all those colleagues for their dedication and service to the company.”

“These targeted changes allow us to focus where it will have the greatest impact – reimagining our best stores, enhancing customer service, expanding our luxury business, and advancing our supply chain capabilities,” Spring added.

The roughly dozen closures come even as Macy’s noted an increase in sales.
