LITTLE FALLS, New York (WABC) — First responders helped rescue a dog and its owner from an icy canal in Little Falls over the weekend.
Investigators say a woman was walking with her Labrador Bernese Mountain dog mix last Saturday when the dog got too close to the water and fell in.
When the woman tried to get the dog out, she also fell in.
New York State Police responded to the call around 8:50 a.m., on Jan. 10 to assist the Little Falls Police Department and the Little Falls Fire Department.
A passerby called to report the incident.
The first responders removed the woman from the water safely but the dog was struggling and starting to go under.
Trooper Michael Szarek and a fellow officer then used a water rescue rope to help the dog out, but the dog was unable to grab on.
Szarek then went into the water and rescued the dog.
Both the woman and her dog were brought to shore safely. They were not seriously injured.
