For the next few days, North Texas will celebrate the legacy of slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

MLK Day commemorates his birthday, which was Jan. 15, 1929. The annual federal holiday is observed on the third Monday in January, which this year falls on Jan. 19.

If you’re looking for ways to celebrate, educate or volunteer in the community, here is a list of events and activities happening across the Metroplex:

ARLINGTON

ADVANCING DR. KING’S DREAM IN ARLINGTON is a four-day celebration with events held at various locations around the city. For times, locations, and more information, click here.

  • Jan. 17 at 11 a.m. MLK Step Showcase
  • Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. MLK Hubert Moss Ecumenical Service
  • Jan. 19 at 9 a.m. Zeb Strong Jr. MLK Day of Service
  • Jan. 19 at 6 p.m. MLK Youth Extravaganza
  • Jan. 16 – 19 MLK Historical Timeline Exhibit will be on display at each event throughout the celebration.

DALLAS

Week-long celebration for one or more of the following events:

  • Jan. 17 at 8 a.m. MLK fest
  • Jan. 17 at 6:30 p.m. MLK Scholarship & Awards Gala
  • Jan. 18 at 7:30 p.m. 43rd annual Black Music and the Civil Rights Movement Concert- get tickets
  • Jan. 19 at 10:30 a.m. The City of Dallas will host its annual parade down MLK Boulevard.

DENTON

IRVING

  • Jan. 18 at 6 p.m. MLK Observance Event. The annual event is free and open to the public and will feature special performances and readings. Go to the Irving website for the list of performers and speakers.

MESQUITE

  • Jan. 18 at 10 a.m. MLK Parade & Celebration. Following the parade, a community gathering will take place at the Mesquite Arts Center. For more information, visit the City of Mesquite website.

PLANO

  • Jan. 19 at 10 a.m. MLK Parade. Immediately following the parade, attendees are invited to participate in the Collin County NAACP “Call to Action,” reinforcing the day’s focus on civic engagement, advocacy and continued community involvement.   • Jan. 22 at 7 p.m. MLK Celebration- The Dream is Alive. The pre-show will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Robinson Fine Arts Center.
