WILMINGTON – The Elon women’s basketball team did not trail after the opening minutes of the game and cruised to a 72-62 win over UNCW on Friday night.
Ashanti Fox recorded her first double-figure scoring effort of the season with a season-high 17 points, adding a season-best five three-pointers. Tyana Walker (15) and Laila Anderson (13) also reached double figures, with Walker leading the team with seven rebounds.
Elon improves to 7-9 overall and 2-2 in CAA play, while UNCW drops to 5-11 and 1-4 in the conference.
THE RUNDOWN
- Elon fell behind 5–2 early in the first quarter but used a 14–5 run to take a 16–10 lead with 3:39 remaining. UNCW tied the game at 16–16 before back-to-back three-pointers from Ashanti Fox and Tyana Walker put Elon back in front. The Seahawks answered late, with Elon leading 22–19 after one.
- Elon opened the second quarter with a surge, capitalizing on UNCW turnovers to extend the lead to 30–19 behind three-pointers from Samira Khalil and Fox. The Phoenix led by as many as 12 and closed the half ahead 42–33 following a second-chance layup from Ashlee Shaw.
- Elon pushed the lead to 15 at 50–35 with 6:20 left and later went up 57–40 with 2:06 remaining. UNCW responded with an 8–1 run to pull within 10, trailing 58–48 at the end of the third.
- The teams traded baskets throughout the fourth quarter, with Elon securing a 72–62 victory.
NOTES
- Ashanti Fox led all scorers off the bench with a season-high 17 points, while adding three steals and two rebounds.
- Tyana Walker turned in an all-around effort with 15 points, a team-high seven rebounds, and four steals, matching her career-high.
- Laila Anderson reached double figures for the second time this season with 13 points on 4-of-7 shooting, including 2-of-3 from deep.
- Ashlee Shaw finished with 9 points, added two rebounds, and went 3-for-4 at the free-throw line.
- Maraja Pass led the team with four assists and matched her career-high in steals with four.
- Elon led the offensive glass for the 12th time this season, outrebounding the Seahawks 20–9 on the offensive boards, the most offensive rebounds the team has grabbed this season.
- The Phoenix added 18 steals and converted 33 points off turnovers.
- The Phoenix returned the same starting lineup in LaNae Corbett, Maraja Pass, Ashlee Shaw, Tyana Walker, and Tamia Watkins.
