This and that: This is the first game of a back-to-back for the Blazers, who visit the Sacramento Kings on Sunday night. … Portland defeated the Atlanta Hawks 117-101 Thursday night at Moda Center, improving to 8-3 over the last 11 games. … Veteran forward Jerami Grant played for the first time since Dec. 18 in the win, producing 16 points, three assists, two rebounds and two blocks, while making 4 of 9 shots, in 23 minutes off the bench. He had missed the previous 14 games with left Achilles tendonitis. … His return overshadowed an exceptional performance by the Blazers’ bench, which outscored Atlanta’s reserves 55-34, including 19-2 in the fourth quarter. … Rayan Rupert (13 points, three steals, three rebounds, two assists), Duop Reath (eight points, three rebounds and one block), Caleb Love (12 points, three rebounds and three steals) and Robert Williams III (six points, 11 rebounds, two blocks) were instrumental in the win. … The Lakers have dropped four of their last five games, which includes a lopsided 135-117 loss to the Charlotte Hornets on Thursday night in Los Angeles. Luka Doncic scored 39 points and LeBron James added 29 points, nine rebounds and six assists, but the Lakers’ defense was abysmal, allowing a 40-point third quarter, 54% shooting from the field, 47% shooting from three-point range and nine three-pointers to LaMelo Ball. … Los Angeles suffered double-digit defeats to the Hornets and Kings over a four-day stretch last week, falling badly to a pair of lottery-bound teams. … This is the third and final meeting between the Lakers and Blazers this season. The teams have split the first two games, with the Blazers winning 122-108 in Los Angeles in October and the Lakers winning 123-115 in Portland in November. … Doncic and James did not play in either game for the Lakers. … Blazers do-it-all forward Deni Avdija has missed the last two games with a sore lower back. He went through a light pregame workout before the Hawks win and moved fluidly without any visible discomfort. … Doncic, the Lakers’ All-Star guard, is averaging 33.6 points, 8.7 assists and 7.7 rebounds per game this season. He leads the NBA in scoring, ranks fourth in assists and is tied for fourth in triple doubles (four). But he has been ruled out of tonight’s game with a left groin injury.
