Authorities on Wednesday publicly identified a man who was found fatally stabbed behind a Walmart in Logan Heights on the Fourth of July.

Patrol officers responding to a report of an assault found Jason Poindexter, 46, mortally wounded just outside a homeless encampment to the rear of the Walmart at Commercial and 21st streets shortly before 1:30 a.m. on Friday, according to the San Diego Police Department.

Paramedics took Poindexter to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Prior to the arrival of police, a stocky bald man and a thin woman wearing her hair in a ponytail — both described as possibly homeless — were seen leaving the area in separate directions, police Lt. Lou Maggi said.

On Monday, a 45-year-old suspect was arrested in the case and booked into Las Colinas women’s jail in Santee, but she has since been released pending further information, the lieutenant said. Her identity has not been released.

Police have disclosed no suspected motive for the slaying.
