Heavy snow is developing in New York City and across the Tri-State Area this afternoon after moderate to heavy snowfall throughout the morning.

That’s why the CBS News New York Weather Team declared it a First Alert Weather Day for New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

Winter Weather Advisories are in place through 4 a.m. Monday for most of our counties, except Ocean.

An advisory means you’re likely to encounter wintry driving conditions.

What to know about today’s snow storm

The second of two rounds of snow has moved into the Tri-State Area. Many locations have already received some accumulation, and more is on the way. Snow will become moderate to heavy at times for the rest of the day through the evening hours, especially for the East End of Long Island. That is where we now think the highest totals will be. For Sunday night, once the storm departs, lows will plunge into the 20s, ensuring that any untreated roadways and sidewalks will freeze over, becoming very slippery.
