Did Arthur Géa himself up or what?
Incredible emotion from the 21-year-old, world number 198.

Djokovic is warming up
The biggest name in men’s tennis. Novak Djokovic is out on Rod Laver Arena warming up.
He is versing Spaniard Pedro Martínez tonight.
It could be a record-breaking night for the Djoker — a win tonight would be his 100th at the Australian Open.

French 21yo qualifier shocks Jiří Lehečka
There’s been a shock result over on 1573 Arena — Jiří Lehečka has been knocked out by Arthur Géa! In straight sets!
The French qualifier has stunned the number 17 seed and current world number 19.
For context, Géa is world ranked 197.
When you look at the stats, it says it was a close match, as does the scorecard. However, the Frenchman won the right points at the right time.

Enough of the posing, Popyrin…31m agoMon 19 Jan 2026 at 10:19amStraight sets for Świątek, but not straightforward
Iga Świątek has progressed to the second round after beating Yue Yuan in straight sets.
But it took her exactly two hours to get the job done as the Chinese qualifier really challenged the world number two.
That was the longest match she has ever played in the first round of a major tournament.
Plenty of improvement required from Świątek going forward in the tournament.

“I was a bit rusty at the beginning,” she said, adding that it was mostly footwork that was holding her back tonight, in her opinion.
“I have some stuff to work on and that is what I will do.”

Crowd start to side eye as Popyrin and Müller take a set each
You know all that that I was saying about Alexei Popyrin having full dominance of this match against France’s Alexandre Müller? Well, the Aussie has just dropped the second set 3-6.
What happened? It’s a good question and more of Müller hitting some really good points than Popyrin letting too much slide.
In any regard, this match has got a lot more interesting and you can feel that intensity take on a level in the crowd. Let’s see how this next set pans out …

Müller matches Popa to take second set
Well, I didn’t expect that after such a dominant first set from Alex Popyrin.
The Frenchman Alexandre Müller has hit back in a big way, taking the second set 6-3 to level things up at a set each.
The biggest difference in that set? The Frenchman cleaned up his hitting.
Having hit just three winners in the first set, Müller hit 10 to just five unforced errors in the second.
Popyrin hit a solid 13 winners, but made 12 unforced errors of his own.
It’s a role reversal from the first set, and Popyrin is in a battle on John Cain.

Andreeva overcomes slow start to win
The number eight women’s seed Mirra Andreeva has defeated Donna Vekić in three sets.
Vekić started strong winning the first set and a shock result looked on the cards.
However, 18-year-old Andreeva turned things around in the second set, and in the third she only let her Croatian opponent win seven points.

She was ruthless in the third set.

Popyrin staying calm as crowd ramps up

It’s fair to say the home crowd at John Cain Arena are liking what they’re seeing.
Aussie Alexei Popyrin is in full control of this match against France’s Alexandre Müller, leading 6-2, 1-1, and is now on serve.
He’s hit an amazing number of aces — 10 in the first set — but is remaining very composed.
We’ve seen Aussies love to ramp up the crowd here on the “people’s court” but Popyrin is keeping very calm at this point in the tournament.
The crowd have only had one warning so far for making too much noise during play.

Great stuff from Alex Popyrin.
A comfortable first set for the Aussie.
He hit 10 aces to 0, won 93 per cent of his first serves, hit one of those serves at 216km/h and averaged 197km/h on his first serve.
He has 17 winners to 3 and only made eight unforced errors too.
Very impressive.

Medical timeout for Yuan
Yue Yuan is being treated by two physios courtside and has taken a medical timeout.
Iga Świątek is in control in the second set, up three games to love.
The world number two is using this opportunity to speak with her coach and practice some serves.

Popyrin with the early breaks
So far so good for Alexei Popyrin.
He has broken Alexandre Müller twice.
He’s served seven aces.
He leads 5-1 at the start of this match, to the delight of the John Cain Arena crowd, which is popping off nicely.

Crowd at Popyrin’s match starting to get vocal
Just like Alexei Popyrin’s opponent Alexandre Müller with his first serves, it took a while for the crowd at John Cain Arena to warm up.

But now, as the Aussie leads 4-1 in the opening set, it has found its voice.
People across the full stands are intermittently yelling versions of “C’mon Popyrin” and “Let’s go Poppy” as the man himself takes a commanding lead.
It’s just the sort of start the home crowd were hoping for. Let’s see if Popyrin can keep up the dominance.

Świątek takes the first after challenging start
It wasn’t her best tennis, but Iga Świątek has clawed her way through a tie break to win the first set.
Yue Yuan was serving for the set there in that tie break.
The Chinese qualifier also picked up two breaks in that set, but Świątek showed her class to find a way to win.
The set lasted just shy of an hour, unusually long for a first round match involving Świątek.
But when it mattered the most, she stepped up.
1h agoMon 19 Jan 2026 at 9:14amHijikata dominant in the third, wins in straight sets
Hijikata has done it in straight sets on court six. 6-3, 6-3, 6-1.
(Australian Open)
After a hard-fought opening two sets, the Australian powered his way home in the third over Adrian Mannarino.
Across the match, Hijikata smashed 45 winners, an incredible 33 more than his French opponent.
He moved quickly in the third set and did so by rushing the net more often to put Mannarino under pressure.
Rinky must have been told if he hurries up he can catch the third set of the match between Martin Damm and Valentin Vacherot.
He will face the winner of that in the second round, and at this moment it looks likely to be the 30-seed Vacherot.

Crowd filling up for Popyrin
The affectionally dubbed people’s court of John Cain Arena is filling up for Aussie fan favourite Alexei Popyrin’s first round match with France’s Alexandre Müller.
“Let’s go, Poppy!” can be heard from the stands that recently bore witness to Ajla Tomljanović’s three-set victory over Yuliia Starodubtseva.
This one could go either way. Popyrin is ranked 50th, while Müller is ranked 52nd.
Not long until, hopefully, another Aussie win — fingers crossed!

Don’t tell Tomljanović it’s OK if she loses a point
“I’m just so happy to have won that,” Tomljanović says.
“I was a little worried, it was such a high level. I felt like I had a bit of a slow start.
“Just really fortunate to get a really good start in the third.”
She says the crowd has been amazing, but that there were some words of encouragement from her dad she wasn’t so impressed with.
“My coaching staff … my coach is quiet but my dad is loud,” she said.
“I had to tell him to be quiet a bit, he’s almost too encouraging sometimes.
“His timing is off sometimes.
“I lost a really tough point and he said, ‘It’s OK, it’s OK,’ and I really hate that.”

Świątek broken again
That’s two breaks of serve from the Chinese qualifier Yuan over the world number two!
Świątek managed to pull a break back earlier in the set, but it has instantly been wiped out.
Yuan leads 4-3 in the first set now. Świątek does not yet look at her best.
