A venerable California taco shop is coming to Dallas-Fort Worth: Called Roberto’s Taco Shop #5, it’s a family-owned chain founded in San Diego, which will open its first DFW location in Bedford, in the former Burger Street space at 2902 SH-121.

According to the owner, it’s set to open in late July.

Roberto’s was founded by namesake Roberto and Dolores Robledo in San Diego in 1964. The couple started with a tortilleria before opening what they call “San Diego’s first walk-up and drive-thru taco shop.”

The couple’s son, Jose Robledo, is the current owner, leading the company’s expansion, after spending 36 years in the family business. There are 80 locations in Nevada, California, and Texas.

The Bedford location is the fourth in Texas, following two in Lubbock and one in Waco, which opened in March 2024.

The restaurant specializes in Southern California-style Mexican food, which is different from Tex-Mex.

“We stand out for our unique style, fresh ingredients, and California flavors,” Jose says. “Additionally, we’d like to emphasize that we don’t serve fajitas, nacho cheese sauce, or chips & salsa.”

The menu features combo plates and specials such as:

  • soft and crispy tacos with steak, chicken, shrimp, or fish
  • crispy rolled tacos
  • tostadas on a flat crispy shell topped with meat, beans, lettuce, and cheese

There are breakfast burritos, tortas with shredded beef, tamales, and shrimp in diablo sauce, plus they have cinnamon sugar churros for dessert.

There are combo plates for $11.40, but everything on the menu is under $20.

The space is small, so there will be limited seating, though they promise there will be plenty of outdoor seating.

Jose says that they’ve welcomed customers from all over Texas and beyond at their current three locations, and Dallas-Fort Worth will be yet more accessible.

“Bedford is centrally located and close to DFW Airport,” Jose says. “We have customers in Waco, from as far away as Denton, Fort Worth, Austin, and College Station.”
