The city of Arlington is broadening overnight cold shelter options in preparation for extreme cold temperatures predicted to occur throughout the weekend. 

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm watch Tuesday and warned of hazardous and life-threatening conditions due to wintry precipitation expected to occur most of Friday. 

With temperatures expected to plunge to below freezing by 6 p.m. Friday, the city of Arlington is activating overnight cold weather shelters located at the Salvation Army Arlington Corps Community Center and First Methodist United Church. 

The city added a third overnight and warming shelter at Nations Church Arlington. First Methodist United Church will also serve as a warming shelter from 5-8 p.m.

Breakfast will be served.  

Accepting up to 30 individuals.

Registration for overnight shelters will be 7-9 p.m. beginning Friday and will continue through 9 a.m. Monday. Guests will be served breakfast and are required to check out of the shelters by 9 a.m. every day. 

Nations Church Arlington

Open from noon Friday until 8 a.m. Monday 

Food, protective clothing and toiletries will be available.

Nations Church Arlington will open its doors at noon Friday, and will be operating as a warming shelter for 24 hours until 8 a.m. Monday. The church will provide beds, blankets, protective clothing, toiletries, food and entertainment for any impacted individuals. The church will accept a maximum of 40 people. 

Nations Church will also provide transportation for those physically unable to walk to the church. Church officials ask for those in need of transportation to gather at noon at the George W. Hawkes Downtown Library, and the McDonalds on 611 W. Abram St., where church members will provide transportation. 

Nations Church is accepting donations throughout the weekend to support impacted individuals.

Throughout the day, Arlington officials advise impacted individuals to visit any Arlington Public Library location, which will serve as warming shelters during operating hours. 

The Arlington Animal Services Shelter will also accept homeless individuals’ pets as capacity allows. 

Gov. Greg Abbott activated state emergency response resources with the Texas Division of Emergency Management on Tuesday in preparation for the Arctic conditions.

The warning has been issued for throughout the weekend. The National Weather Service advises residents to limit travel on roads and to watch out for unprotected pipes, pets and plants.
