Around NYC

1. Judge tosses lines of NYC’s only Republican House seat, as state enters redistricting wars

A judge has ordered New York to redraw the boundaries of the city’s only Republican-held congressional district, ruling its current map unlawfully dilutes the voting power of Black and Hispanic residents.

The seat, represented by Rep. Nicole Malliotakis and spanning Staten Island and part of Brooklyn, must be reconfigured ahead of this year’s midterms. Republicans are expected to appeal.

2. Mamdani continues calls to tax the rich, announces ban on hotel ‘junk fees’

Mayor Zohran Mamdani doubled down on his call to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers, brushing off opposition from Gov. Kathy Hochul, who has ruled out tax hikes in her budget.

Mamdani says new revenue is needed to fund priorities like universal childcare as the city heads into state budget negotiations. He also announced new rules banning hidden hotel “junk fees” and surprise credit card holds.

3. Final model of modern fare gates in MTA pilot debuts

The MTA has installed the third and final model of modern fare gates at select subway stations as part of a pilot aimed at reducing fare evasion.

The latest gates, from Korean firm STraffic, follow two earlier designs that critics say were easily bypassed. While some riders are hopeful, others remain skeptical after viral videos showed evasion and bottlenecks at busy stations.
