CHICAGO (WLS) — A massive winter storm sweeping across the U.S. brought snow to the Chicago area on Sunday.

A Winter Weather Advisory went into effect for much of the area on Saturday night, and ABC7 meteorologists have issued an AccuWeather Alert for snow and slick roads.

Cook, Lake (Ill.), DuPage, Kendall, Grundy, Kankakee, LaSalle, Will and Livingston counties will be under the advisory from 6 p.m. Saturday to midnight Monday.

The advisory will impact Newton and Jasper counties until 3 a.m. Monday, Lake (Ind.) and Porter counties until 6 a.m. Monday, and LaPorte County until 1 a.m. Monday.

By 8 a.m. Morton Grove saw about 3.5 inches, Garfield Park 3.3 inches and about 1.1 inches at O’Hare airport.

ABC7 meteorologist says lake-effect snow could bring up to 6 inches of snow in some areas.

Overnight, slick roads covered the area as snow plows worked to keep up with the accumulating snow.

The winter blast caused air travel troubles across the country. More than 8,000 flights were canceled around the U.S.

More than 500 flights were canceled by Sunday at O’Hare, along with over 100 at Midway.

The FAA has also warned about airport closures. The agency says they will be working with airlines and airports on recovery efforts including snow removal and deicing planes.

Meanwhile, next week will remain very cold in Chicago.

Monday will mark 59 years since the record-breaking 1967 Chicago blizzard, which brought 23 inches of snow. ABC7’s Tracy Butler said just days before the storm it was about 60 degrees in the area.

Nearly 60 years ago Chicago saw the most snow fall ever.

At least 20 states declare state of emergency amid winter storm

The snow was expected to paralyze the South with dangerous ice and snow.
