“He loved it,” Madigan tells PEOPLE of Harris’ reaction to her role in Weapons as Aunt Gladys
Amy Madigan is sharing what four decades of marriage to Ed Harris looks like.
Madigan and Harris, both 75, have been married since 1983. As the actress receives critical acclaim for her role in 2025’s horror hit Weapons, she tells PEOPLE that she and Harris “don’t have” any specific trick to making their relationship work.
“We just love each other and we work really hard at that and in our work,” Madigan says at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards on Tuesday, Jan. 6.
Madigan received the event’s Best Supporting Actress award for her role as the antagonist Aunt Gladys in Weapons, which follows several characters in the aftermath of the mysterious disappearance of several elementary school students from their homes overnight. Madigan’s Gladys emerged as a fan-favorite character when the movie released in August 2025 and helped propel Weapons into one of the year’s best-loved films.
“He loved it,” she tells PEOPLE of Harris’ reaction to the movie and her role. “He’s known me a long time and he saw all the parts of myself melded into Aunt Gladys. So, I have a very supportive family, my daughter also, so I’m very lucky.”

Harris and Madigan share one daughter: Lily, 32, who has dabbled in acting with roles in a 2021 episode of Chicago Med and in the 2025 movie Skillhouse. “They’re just saying, ‘You can do it. Hang in there,’ ” Madigan says, when asked how her family is supporting her during awards season. “I’m like, ‘I don’t want to get hair and makeup done again,’ and they’re like, ‘It’s okay.’ “

Madigan won the Critics Choice Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the movie on Jan. 4. She was also nominated for a Golden Globe Award for her efforts and told PEOPLE back in December that both he and Harris were “having a good giggle about it.”
“I think really what it means is that if you get an opportunity to work on a wonderful script and it’s a great part, regardless of who you are, and where you live, and what age you are,” she said of the honor. “If you’re an actor, you wait for those opportunities and moments, so it just feels great.”
Madigan is also up for Best Supporting Actress at the 2026 Academy Awards in March, marking her first-ever Oscar nod.
