State lawmakers expect issues shaping national politics, like rising tensions over immigration enforcement and the actions of federal officers, will punctuate what ends up in New York’s final budget deal due April 1.

Capital Tonight’s Kate Lisa spoke with Senate Finance Committee Chair Liz Krueger, Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz and NYPIRG’s senior policy advisor Blair Horner after an ICE agent over the weekend shot and killed the second Minneapolis resident this month.

Krueger said the Legislature must protect New Yorkers from illegal activity by federal agents — either in the budget or outside it. She wants to pass a policy that is enforceable, and a state policy that applies to all federal agencies, not just ICE.

She’s open to partnering with other states have a coordinated response to ICE and other federal officers.

“The more states who go down the exact same road in pushback, the more effective we will be throughout the country,” she said.
