TxDOT updates I-45 North Houston project with rescheduled closures and detours
HHouston

TxDOT moves forward with Alabama Street bridge demolition near downtown Houston

  • January 28, 2026

Drivers traveling near downtown Houston should plan ahead as TxDOT advances work tied to the I-45 North Houston Highway Improvement Project. Several daytime lane and ramp closures are scheduled as crews prepare to remove the Alabama Street bridge over I-69.

TxDOT says the Alabama Street bridge demolition is part of the larger reconstruction of I-45 through downtown Houston. The bridge is being removed to allow for new roadway alignment, improved drainage, and long-term changes connected to the I-45 expansion project.

Lane closure this week

The first impacts begin Wednesday, January 28. Alabama Street westbound will have its inside lane closed between Chenevert Street and Almeda Road from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

TxDOT says crews will be staging equipment and preparing the area ahead of the bridge demolition scheduled for February 6 through February 9.

Ramp closure next week

Another closure follows on Monday, February 2. The I-69 northbound entrance ramp from McGowen Street will close from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

TxDOT says contractors will use this time to install new drainage structures as part of the same project.

Detour information

Drivers using the McGowen Street ramp will be detoured:

  • Right on McGowen Street

  • Left on Emancipation Avenue

  • Left on Gray Street

  • Right on Chartres Street

  • Left on Commerce Street

  • Right on Chenevert Street to reenter I-69 northbound

What to expect next

TxDOT says additional detour details tied to the Alabama Street bridge demolition and related closures planned for February 6 through February 9 will be released soon. Drivers should expect more traffic shifts as work continues on the I-45 project through downtown Houston.
