Phoenix area APS, SRP customers set energy use records during 118-degree day

  • July 10, 2025

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — On the hottest day of the year so far, two major electric companies reported record energy use across Valley households on Wednesday.

APS says its customers set a new all-time peak energy demand record of 8,527 megawatts between 5 and 6 p.m. Last year, APS’ record was set at 8,210 megawatts.

In addition, SRP customers also set a record of 8,324 megawatts between 3 and 4 p.m., around the time the mercury reached 118 degrees at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. SRP’s previous peak record was set last August, when customers used 8,205 megawatts.

The Valley of the Sun reached a blazing 118 degrees — the second time this summer we’ve reached 117 degrees or higher. We are expecting temperatures to slightly dip for the rest of this week as a ridge of high pressure shifts away from Arizona to the west.
