As ice and snow hit North Texas over the weekend, thousands sought shelter from the freezing temperatures.

Multiple municipalities and nonprofit organizations across the region opened up shelters to provide a warm place and meals.

As of Wednesday, the temporary inclement weather shelter in Fair Park, put together by the city of Dallas and homelessness services providers Austin Street Center and OurCalling, provided refuge to 1,330 people.

According to OurCalling, 308 volunteers participated and 14,000 meals were served.

The shelter at Fair Park’s Automobile Building, 3809 Grand Ave., will stay open as long as temperatures remain below freezing, which is 32 degrees.

The city of Dallas shelter operations have placed 12 households into hotels, including 17 adults and 26 children. Also, 14 pets are being housed at the temporary shelter: seven dogs and seven cats.

The Salvation Army of North Texas served 864 people across its warming centers in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

From Monday to Tuesday night, the nonprofit’s locations in Garland, Denton, Arlington and Fort Worth saw an increase in the number of individuals served.

The Garland location has seen an increase in people served every night since Friday, said Raegan Lucido, a spokesperson for The Salvation Army of North Texas.

These locations will continue to be open Wednesday night to provide shelter:

Dallas County

  • Carr P. Collins Social Service Center, 5302 Harry Hines Blvd.
  • Garland Corps Community Center, 451 W. Ave. D.

Tarrant County

  • Arlington Corps Community Center, 712 W. Abram St.
  • J.E. & L.E. Mabee Social Service Center, 1855 E. Lancaster Ave.
