The family is getting back together for the latest installment in the Fast & Furious franchise.

Universal announced Friday that the forthcoming sequel in the racing series is entitled Fast Forever and set for theatrical release March 17, 2028. It follows the previous installment — director Louis Leterrier’s Fast X — having hit theaters in 2023.

Franchise star Vin Diesel, known for his role as Dominic Toretto, celebrated the news on Instagram, posting a photo of himself with late co-star Paul Walker, who played Brian O’Conner in the films. Walker died in November 2013 while Furious 7 was still in production, and his character’s scenes were completed through CGI, archival footage and the use of brothers Caleb and Cody Walker as stand-ins.

“No one said the road would be easy… but it’s ours,” Diesel wrote in his post. “One that has defined us and become our legacy… And a legacy… lasts Forever. March 17th 2028! FAST FOREVER.”

A sequel to Fast X was initially slated to hit theaters in spring of 2025 but was delayed, and Universal has yet to share details about the filmmaking team, cast or plot for Fast Forever. Back in February 2024, Diesel posted to Instagram that the series’ forthcoming 11th film would mark the finale for the franchise’s core story.

“Just finished our end of the week Fast meeting with the writers and the whole team… to say the excitement for our finale was incredibly powerful is an understatement,” he wrote at the time. “This grand finale is not just an ending; it’s a celebration of the incredible family we’ve built together. Hope to make you proud!”

Last year, the actor attended Fuel Fest, an automative event that Cody Walker organized. During the event, Diesel announced that the next movie would feature a “return to the car culture, to the street racing.” He also teased a reunion for Dom and Brian and added, “That is what you’re going to get in the finale.”

The franchise, which includes the 2019 spinoff Hobbs & Shaw that starred Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham, has surpassed $7 billion at the global box office after launching with 2001’s The Fast and the Furious. Fast X included such franchise mainstays as Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Jordana Brewster and Sung Kang, along with newer additions like Statham, John Cena, Helen Mirren, Charlize Theron, Jason Momoa and a cameo from Johnson’s Hobbs.

In his review of Fast X for The Hollywood Reporter, critic Frank Scheck wrote that the addition of Momoa is “one of the best things to ever happen to the franchise.”
