PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — More than 20,000 tickets are sold out as national attention turns to South Philadelphia tonight for Unrivaled, a fast-paced 3-on-3 women’s basketball league.

The sold-out event is being held at Xfinity Mobile Arena, marking the league’s first time leaving its home base.

Unrivaled was created by WNBA players Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart and features off-season competition among top players from the league.

The push to bring Unrivaled to Philadelphia was led in part by comedian Wanda Sykes’ organization, Philadelphia Sisters.

“Our mission is to bring women’s professional sports to this city and just continue to grow the movement,” Sykes said.

“Good Morning America’s” Robin Roberts featured the matchups on Friday morning.

“Unrivaled could have gone anywhere,” said Roberts. “This is the first time they’ve left their home base, and they chose Philadelphia.”

Frida night’s sold-out matchups bring professional players Natasha Cloud and Kahleah Copper back to their hometown. Copper said the return is personal.

“I’m from 32nd and Berks, so I’m excited for my friends and family, those that supported me to come out and to see the seeds that they planted,” Copper said.

The event marks the return of women’s professional basketball to Philadelphia for the first time since 1998. Local high school athletes were among those highlighting the significance.

“Showing the next gen, in a few years, they’ll be in the same situation, they’ll be them same players,” said Duke Landers of Yungest In Charge.

Demand for the games has extended beyond the box office. Resale prices for tonight’s matchups are reaching $165, exceeding average prices for Flyers and 76ers tickets.

Proving the saying, “Philadelphia is a women’s sports town.”
