The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office says that its investigation into the commander dates back to July 2025.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A navy commander was arrested on Friday for alleged child sex crimes, the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office says.

SJSO says that their investigation into Navy Commander and Deputy Director of Naval Academy Sailing Jonathan Saburn, 44, began in July 2025. Officers say that a victim had reported “delayed incidents of abuse.”

According to SJSO, Saburn “engaged in inappropriate behavior and touching on several occasions when the victim was young, in both St. Johns and Duval counties.”

Saburn was arrested on Friday while on duty at Naval Station Mayport, where he is held at the Duval County jail on no bond.

He is charged with lewd or lascivious molestation, lewd or lascivious exhibition and child abuse.
