“Someone was there,” Lorraine Marin, an employee at Brolick Gym, said. “The food truck was there. And a few seconds later it just dropped down. Like a big bang just dropped down.”
Marin was describing the moments her co-worker from Brolick Gym on Fulton Street in Brooklyn was walking down the street and an MTA cable fell from an overhead train track.
NY1 obtained surveillance video that shows the moment it happened.
“So we didn’t know what it was until we looked outside and we see that the wire from the train just dropped,” Marin said.
MTA crews were seen repairing the cable throughout the morning and into the afternoon.
The MTA said shortly after 6 a.m., a “communication” cable began to fall from the train tracks above Fulton Street from Linwood Street to Elton Street.
FDNY officials said they arrived to find the cable had come down at the Cleveland Street station where the J and Z line trains run.
According to the MTA, about half a dozen vehicles were damaged.
In some cases, the mirrors on the cars were shattered.
“I just come out from my house to start my regular day job,” Franklin Rodriguez, who lives in the neighborhood, said. “I’m just trying to go out and do my regular day things.”
Rodriguez came outside to find his car trapped from the maintenance work being done to repair the cable line.
“They [are trying] to fix something about the train. I’m just surprised right now,” he said.
An MTA spokesperson said they believe the incident is weather-related but the investigation is ongoing.
The agency also said there were no injuries and no disruptions to J and Z train service because the fallen cable was not damaged.
