Two men have been hospitalized following a shooting after a clerk tried to stop a person from stealing.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A gunfight left two people seriously injured and businesses and cars were struck by bullets. Now, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident.

During Saturday’s afternoon, deputies from JSO responded to reports of a person being shot in Shirley Avenue, in the vicinity of Lakeshore.

Upon arriving, deputies found that the clerk in a shop saw someone allegedly in the process of stealing. When the clerk went up to the person, the clerk was confronted by a man who then began shooting at him.

“There was an exchange of gunfire, with several businesses and vehicles being struck,” a JSO deputy told First Coast News. “We currently have several people detained in relation to this incident. This appears to be an isolated incident without further threat to the community.”

The clerk, a man in his early 20s, was injured with a life-threatening gunshot wound to his chest and was transported to a local hospital by emergency crews.

After the incident, the JSO deputy said, a man, also in his early 20s was taken in a car to the hospital. He is currently in critical condition and suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

The investigation is still ongoing, and JSO said findings are preliminary, since detectives are still processing the crime scene for evidence. Detectives are also speaking with witnesses and canvassing for additional material.
