STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Staten Island residents will experience continued cold temperatures Monday with highs remaining below freezing. The National Weather Service forecast indicates mainly dry conditions through Thursday before a potential snow event Friday.
According to the National Weather Service, temperatures will generally remain below freezing throughout the week for Staten Island and the rest of New York City. Monday will see northwest winds of 10-15 mph with gusts around 20 mph during the day, gradually diminishing by evening. Brief minor tidal flooding is possible during Monday morning’s high tide cycle in some coastal areas.
Tuesday night brings a slight chance of flurries or snow showers as an upper trough passes through the region. The National Weather Service notes this would produce minimal accumulation at most, with a “worst case scenario” of a dusting in some spots. Temperatures will remain cold through midweek with no significant precipitation expected Wednesday or Thursday.
A more significant weather system arrives Friday as an arctic front moves through the area. This front is expected to bring light snow to Staten Island and the rest of New York City, followed by frigid temperatures for the weekend. Wind chills could drop below zero Friday night and potentially reach 10-20 degrees below zero by Saturday night.
The weekend forecast looks particularly harsh with strong northwest winds on Saturday potentially reaching advisory criteria. These winds, combined with the arctic air mass, will create dangerous cold conditions across Staten Island and the entire New York City region.
Residents should prepare for the prolonged cold spell by ensuring heating systems are functioning properly, protecting exposed pipes, and having emergency supplies on hand before the arctic front arrives Friday.
