Newswise — PHILADELPHIA — Antonio Giordano, MD, PhD, director and founder of the Sbarro Health Research Organization (SHRO) and professor at Temple University, has been inducted as a member of the Union League of Philadelphia, one of the nation’s most historic civic institutions.
Founded in 1862 during the Civil War, the Union League of Philadelphia was established to support the ideals of the Union and the leadership of President Abraham Lincoln. The Club has since played a lasting role in American civic life, serving as a forum for public service, intellectual exchange, and leadership. Its history is closely intertwined with the principles enshrined in the U.S. Constitution, whose signing is commemorated annually in Philadelphia, the nation’s birthplace.
The induction ceremony, including remarks by Robert D. Kane, Jr., Vice President of Liberty Hill, and Robert M. Cavalier, President of the Union League, recognized Dr. Giordano for his body of work reflecting a commitment to public good, scholarship, and service. Over a career spanning decades, he has made substantial contributions to cancer biology, molecular medicine, and translational research. As founder of SHRO, Dr. Giordano has advanced global scientific collaboration while supporting education, early-career researchers, policy and philanthropic initiatives aimed at improving human health.
“Membership in the Union League is a great honor for me,” Giordano said, “and it is a privilege to be among the members and leadership of this organization that is so dedicated to civic responsibility and the advancement of society. I would like to especially thank Salvatore Patti and Frank Giordano for the support of my candidacy.”
The honor places Dr. Giordano among a distinguished community of leaders from science, medicine, public service, and the arts, reflecting the Union League’s enduring mission to uphold the principles of the Constitution and contribute to the civic and cultural life of the nation.
