EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Mayor Karen Bass is expected to sign an executive directive Friday morning to support Los Angeles’ immigrant communities.
This comes days after federal agents descended on MacArthur Park earlier this week near downtown.
Immigration enforcement operations began June 6 in the city and then spread to other nearby areas, leading to protests and clashes.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Bass, local law enforcement and other officials have maintained that the protests were mostly peaceful and only escalated after President Donald Trump deployed the California National Guard and Marines to the area.
Trump has stated that he wants to “liberate” LA, and that he sent Guard troops in response to what he described as riots when protests broke out across the city.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
