NEW YORK — On Monday morning, the Trump administration asked a federal court for a stay of Friday night’s Gateway Tunnel temporary restraining order.
Unless the order is stayed by 1 p.m. Monday, the order requires the government to disburse up to $200 million for the project.
The Gateway Tunnel Commission has said access to federal funding would allow work to quickly restart and get workers back on on the job.
It comes as a federal judge ordered the Trump administration to restore funding for the new rail tunnel between New York and New Jersey on Friday.
Friday’s decision came as construction was about to stop due to a funding freeze.
The Trump administration had halted $16 billion for the project, citing concerns about unconstitutional spending.
U.S. District Judge Jeannette A. Vargas approved a temporary restraining order to keep the funds flowing while the case plays out in court.
The project aims to ease strain on an over 110-year-old tunnel connecting the two states, crucial for Amtrak and commuter trains.
