WWE Raw results, grades (Feb. 9): LA Knight, Rhea Ripley win Elimination Chamber qualifiers

“WWE Raw” continued the road to Elimination Chamber on Monday as the red brand headed to Rocket Arena in Cleveland. Championship stakes and qualification implications were woven throughout the night, with “Raw’s” latest stop clearing up the landscape before WWE’s next premium live event.

Mami and the Chamber Knight

Elimination Chamber season is in full swing. Triple H is doing his best to keep me happy by booking triple-threat qualifying matches and giving LA Knight a much-needed win. But who am I kidding? Any win is much-needed for “The Megastar” at this point, and thankfully, he got what was rightfully his: A spot on Feb. 28 in the men’s Elimination Chamber match.

With all that said, I’m happy enough — for now.

Knight’s win came after an expected interference from The Vision, when Austin Theory appeared in trouble toward the match’s climax. All of this was fine overall, and most importantly, it advanced the story of The Vision and WWE’s new masked man, the latter of whom ultimately aided Knight’s victory. The mystery man stomped Theory on the outside after he took out Penta, allowing for the Knight BFT pin.

Honestly, this Theory return “push” — if you can even call it that — has already failed massively. His first night after the reveal seemed promising, but he’s since been relegated to nothing more than the chump stable member. That’s not at all a surprise, and was expected by most; it just makes this feel all the sillier.

WWE has admittedly had to deal with injury curveballs to both Seth Rollins and Bron Breakker. But it might just be best to dissolve this whole project now.

As for Breakker, he was confirmed at the start of the night to be out “indefinitely” after reports broke earlier in the day that he had hernia surgery.

In the women’s qualifier match of the night, WWE Tag Team Champion Rhea Ripley defeated Lyra Valkyria and Ivy Nile.

I did my best to be optimistic about a surprise Valkyria win. That was naive, of course, as a Ripley Chamber spot is guaranteed money, as per usual. However, the match served Nile more than the others. She more than held her own and made the most of her time. Hopefully something will come from it.

Now it’s probably safe to assume Iyo Sky — who was absent from Monday’s show — also makes her way into the Elimination Chamber match, inching us toward RhIyo’s break-up. Or better yet, a beautifully emotional, friendly rivalry. A titleless one-on-one match between these two at WrestleMania would be more than worthy enough to add to the billing, considering the story they’ve built over the past years.

😐 Dud of the Night

It was hard to predict how WWE would book the first iteration of Nattie vs. Maxxine Dupri, if only because this feud was never going to be a one-and-done on a random ‘Raw’ in Cleveland. What we got, however, was a literal dud match that lasted two minutes at most before a double count-out.

Nattie pursued punishment rather than a win, which is fine. Something just feels off so far, starting with the likely tag-team match we’re going to get between Becky Lynch and Nattie vs. AJ Lee and Dupri. Lynch has been upset about her Royal Rumble loss — which she omitted mentioning came from Nattie.

The lone-wolf badass persona should remain intact for Nattie, even if it means avoiding one-off teams. Pairing with Lynch makes no sense right now.

🎁 Gift of the Night

Speaking of Lynch, her and Lee were the focus to start this Monday night.

Lynch has descended into madness and paranoia. Lee’s return only amplified that, and these two are great contrasting characters. While there has been a bit of separation between the pair, Lee’s presence alone Monday was enough for Lynch to just give her a title shot at Elimination Chamber.

This gets a pass, given the history they’ve built since Lee returned to WWE. More than anything, it’s good to see a resolution to the feud is still on the way.

Rinse and repeat on the same night

So CM Punk pulled a Lynch and handed Finn Balor a title rematch at Elimination Chamber. All because Balor existed. Don’t you love the logic behind some of these title shots?

At least in this case, Punk justified his decision — and did so in a fiery manner.

This is, undeniably, the same exact situation we saw with Cody Rhodes in his title feuds with Kevin Owens and Drew McIntyre, though. That’s where things gets weird.

Another Balor banger match that results in him losing clean makes this all seem pointless. I’d love to see Balor regain his status as a championship main-eventer; we just can’t ignore that the money is on Dominik Mysterio vs. Balor at WrestleMania. So, expect Mysterio to cost Balor the win in Chicago, which is probably where this should all head anyway, since The Judgment Day desperately needs to disband.

👑 Uncrowned Gem of the Night 👑

This Monday’s Uncrowned Gem is practically just the “Spot of the Night” award. How could it be anything other than Je’Von Evans’ double mid-air OG Cutter on Bravo Americano?

With both men down, Penta goes to the top rope and double crossbody’s onto Knight and Theory. Knight takes a slingblade. Theory a kick in the corner before a backstabber. Knight breaks up the pin, then gets super kicked. They get into the corner with Knight seeking a superplex. Penta fights him off, opening up the superplex. Theory gets under them for a powerbomb superplex, but Knight kicks out. Theory misses the stomp to take a reverse DDT. Knight goes up top for the elbow drop.

There it is. The Vision arrives, of course. Right on queue. Bronson Reed smashes Knight outside after he targets Paul. Reed tsunami’s Knight, leading to a Theory stomp. Penta saves the match, pulling Theory off and hitting a super kick. Penta gets countered onto the announce table, then a masked man attacks Theory with the stomp! The Vision runs after him. In the ring, Knight crawls to Theory, they stand, and he hits the BFT for the win! Wonderful. The right man wins. The last sliver of hope remains intact.

Knight rattles off strikes to Theory and hits a neckbreaker off a suplex counter. Penta breaks up the pin to get jaw-jacked by Knight. Knight goes over the rope when looking for an attack on Penta. Theory lands a brainbuster to Penta. Theory misses his corner attack, taking chest chops in return from the luchador. Theory regains control, hitting a spinebuster that’s kicked out at 2. Knight re-enters and launches into Theory with a clothesline before sending him to the outside and slamming him into the announce table. Penta gets involved and takes some shots of his own. Knight is firmly in control. The Vision will interfere at any moment now.

Theory counters the BFT with a roll-up. No dice. Knight counters a rolling drop kick with a back suplex mid-air.

Knight and Theory were the story to start. Though Penta has a history with The Vision himself, it made sense that they both went after him. A quick roll-up from Penta on Knight was kicked out of before they both clotheslined Theory. Knight went for his own roll-up to no avail. They start to exchange. Penta hits the hurricanrana and tope con hilo to the outside on Knight. Penta hits the ropes and gets tripped up by Theory, who re-enters for a rolling drop kick on Knight. He goes back outside and slams Penta into the steel steps.

Raw main event time. As much fun as it would be to have Penta in an Elimination Chamber match, LA Knight has to win this. Otherwise, it’s all the way over for the “Megastar.” There will be no convincing me. It’s been over, but a loss here would really do it.

After the match, El Grande Americano squared attempted to unmask each other. This is clearly heading toward a mask-versus-mask match soon — that would be the wise booking choice, anyway.

Evans starts fighting off Los Americanos in their corner. A big bouncing whisper in the wind lands for Evans, allowing for the Grande tag-in. Rayo starts getting German suplex’d around the ring. He finds a double German suplex on both Americanos. Rayo gets caught in the ankle lock, but counters by launching Grande into his corner to tag Evans. With the referee distracted, “Ameri-Kaiser” knocks Grande off the top rope. Evans then meets Bravo mid-air for an INSANE OG Cutter! Grande gets back on the rope for a diving headbutt to score the win. Wow. That was one hell of a spot.

Rayo and Evans start the match. Evans lands a jumping stunner-type move, leading to Rayo tagging in Bravo. A big drop kick lands, and Rayo tags back in. Grande tags in Evans, but the Americanos missed it. Grande hits a double flying clothesline. Evans re-enters the ring, and they clothesline both Americanos out of the opposite ends of the ring.

As soon as WWE showed the graphic for this mystery match, you just knew it was going to be El Grande “Ameri-Gable” with Je’Von Evans. This is fun and all, but I really hope it doesn’t get dragged out to ‘Mania.

Lynch snuck her way back out to the ring to ram Lee into the ring post. Surely, we’ll see a tag team match between all four next week, or before Elimination Chamber. Hopefully, that doesn’t happen, considering Lynch was eliminated by Nattie at the Royal Rumble. She’s been upset about that without mentioning Nattie, so WWE seems to be erasing that bit from history.

Nattie picks up Dupri right away before Dupri counters with an ankle lock. Nattie fights out and takes a spin kick, rolling out of the ring. Dupri goes for another ankle lock and gets kicked into the steel steps. Nattie tosses her into the ring post and wipes the announce table. Dupri gets hit with a flapjack, and both get counted out. Alright. That was certainly an approach to start with here.

Nattie locks on the sharpshooter on top of the announce table. Lee comes out to make the save, as Nattie backs off through the crowd.

I’m very curious to see how much time these two get. There’s a good feud to give some extended time to here. Ideally, both will be elevated, but the introduction to Nattie in WWE has been executed well so far.

Heyman utilized Breakker’s injury in promo like only he could. Breakker was so heated that he lifted way too much weight at 5 a.m., said Heyman. That was hilarious, but fitting in the story. Pearce ended up telling The Vision not to get involved with Theory’s match before Logan Paul practically threatened him. Is Pearce about to lace up the boots soon?

Cole and Punk continued to have their segment. Punk was questioned why he would do what he just did. Punk said he’s building something and continuing to craft his legacy. He didn’t view it as a risk, but as bravery in the risk-versus-reward for the people who deserve it.

Punk then turned his direction toward Reigns. He bit back at Reigns, claiming to hate him before stating he’ll win their match and there’s nothing Reigns can do about it.

This whole thing was much more about Balor and Punk, and each delivered it perfectly.
