A Phoenix man facing charges of kidnapping and sexual assault after a woman told police he kept her in a shed and abused her was previously accused of trying to abduct and threatening to kill his girlfriend, and of attacking a pregnant woman, a case that landed him in prison, according to court records.
In early July, a woman told police that she and Timothy James Wood, 36, were in a relationship and that he held her captive for about two weeks in a Phoenix backyard shed, and at one point, imprisoned her in a crawl space, according to court records.
Court records show Wood has been charged with aggravated assault, sexual assault and kidnapping, all felonies. Wood was also facing misdemeanor threat and misdemeanor assault charges, records said.
Documents obtained by The Arizona Republic from two previous criminal cases filed against Wood in Maricopa County describe other accusations made against him, including while he was on probation.
Wood pleaded guilty in 2007 to aggravated assault
One set of charges against Wood relates to a Sept. 4, 2007, incident near 35th and Northern avenues in Phoenix. Police reported in a court filing that Wood injured a woman who accused him of threatening to kill her.
Wood was charged with aggravated assault after witnesses said he appeared to be trying to kidnap a screaming woman, police said. Witnesses said they saw Wood trying to pull her into his truck, police said.
Wood told police the woman was his girlfriend and he was trying to remove her from his truck because she would not exit the vehicle during an argument, according to court documents. The two were “trying to work things out,” documents said.
At the time, Wood was subject to a harassment injunction. He was also charged with failing to comply with a court order, a misdemeanor.
On Oct. 16, 2007, Wood received two years of probation on the aggravated assault charge after he pleaded guilty, court records show.

Wood sent to prison after violating probation
A Jan. 1, 2010, incident — five months after his initial probation ended — led to an admission of guilt by Wood. He pleaded to attempted domestic violence, for which he received another sentence of probation, according to court records.
Then, Wood was arrested in an Aug. 4, 2010, incident on Glendale Avenue near Interstate 17 in Phoenix, according to court documents. A police statement filed in court said Wood violated his probation when he approached a pregnant woman without approval. He also had another probation violation, discharge from domestic violence treatment for absences, records said.
It was not clear from court records if the pregnant woman in the 2010 incidents was the woman from the 2007 incident.
Wood was seen at the pregnant woman’s workplace, according to court records. Witnesses told police they saw him assault the woman, and that she had bruising on her chin and arms, records said. Wood choked the woman while she was pregnant, court documents said.
On Aug. 17, 2010, Wood was sentenced to a year in prison with jail time credit for attempted aggravated domestic violence following revocation of his probation, according to court records. Wood completed his sentence June 8, 2011, according to state prison records.
Woman told police she was held in shed, sex prevented abuse
The latest charges against Wood surfaced after a woman, whose name was redacted in court records, came forward on July 2.
This woman told police Wood beat her with an electrical cord and used a saw and chain on her while keeping her from leaving a shed, according to court documents. Police found injuries on the woman, including swelling and bruising on her face, bruising on her body, bite marks and a fractured rib, records said.
The woman told police Wood threatened to kill her and kept her in a crawl space for two days, and that she felt she could only ward off his abuse by having sex with him, court records said. She eventually managed to flee the shed and call police from a neighbor’s home, according to court documents.
The woman and Wood began a relationship after she was evicted from her home, though they knew each other before her eviction, court documents said.
