The Australian Olympic Team have provided an update on Aussie snowboarder Cam Bolton, who was airlifted to hospital after breaking his neck at the Winter Olympics two days ago.
The decision was made – after scans and assessment in Milan – that the best and safest line of management for Cam would be to return to Melbourne.
There, he’ll have further definitive treatment.

Cam will return to Australia on Monday 16 February accompanied by a specialist retrieval doctor and nurse, the Aus Olympic Team said.
“The Australian Olympic medical team will continue to support Cam through his journey home and medical recovery,” their statement read.

Thomas forced out of Milano Cortina Games

Australian team officials have confirmed Daisy Thomas has withdrawn from the freeski big air competition.
They released the following statement a short time ago.
After consultation with her coach and the Australian Olympic medical team, Daisy Thomas has made the tough decision to withdraw from the Freeski Big Air competition, due to take place on 14 February.
In November last year, Thomas suffered a ruptured ACL during competition. After extensive rehab, time in the gym and getting mentally focused, Thomas returned to the World Cup circuit and was selected to make her Olympic debut.
On 6 February, during slopestyle training, Daisy landed awkwardly on her previously injured right knee on the last jump of the run. Daisy had an MRI which showed minor additional damage with symptoms settling quickly over a 48-hour period.
The medical team put in place a progressive rehabilitation program focusing on strength, stability and functional movement and were confident in her ability to return to training. Returning to official training Daisy was unable to complete the session.
Thomas said:
After successful management of swelling and return to snow testing, I was confident in myself and my knee that I could still be a fighting contender for the podium in Big Air. After the first night training another instability episode ensued after several attempts on the Big Air jump.
“This is a high-risk sport and having to contend with knee instability adds another layer of difficulty. It would be a disservice to myself, my sport and my country to try and drop in which would likely result in further injury.
“I’m disappointed that I can’t compete at my very best at the Olympic Games.
“Throughout the past eight weeks I have approached my rehab and return to performance with a level of professionalism that I thought could yield a medal winning performance.
Australia has not activated a late athlete replacement for the freeski big air.

We’re still very much in the round robin stages of curling – but here’s a quick wrap of today’s women’s sessions results:
Switzerland beat China 7-5
United States beat Canada 9-8
South Korea beat Great Britain 9-3
Loads more curling to go! The men’s sessions will be later this morning.

France claims biathlon gold

France’s Quentin Fillon Maillet hit all 10 of his shots and blazed through the final lap to win gold in the men’s biathlon 10km sprint.
Maillet recorded a time of 22 minutes and 53.1 seconds.
Norway’s Vetle Sjåstad Christiansen powered through the last stretch to snatch the silver medal from compatriot Sturla Holm Lægreid.
Lægreid had to be content with his second bronze medal of the Games following his third-place finish in the men’s individual race.
He was the centre of a media storm earlier in the week after admitting to cheating on his ex-girlfriend in a post-race interview.

For only the third time in Winter Olympics history, Australia has won two gold medals at the same Games.
Josie Baff joined Cooper Woods as Aussie Milano Cortina gold medallists, after the latter won the men’s moguls title on day six.
In 2002, Steven Bradbury (short track speed skating) and Alisa Camplin (aerials) won Australia’s first ever gold medals at the Salt Lake City Games.
Eight years later, Torah Bright (snowboard halfpipe) and Lydia Lassila (aerials) matched the feat with their victories in Vancouver.
Who knows … with more than a week to go, Australia may create history in Italy with a third Winter Olympics gold.

I knew I could do it and I knew deep down that I had what it took … to have one of the world’s most sought-after gold medals around my neck is absolutely incredible. I wouldn’t change anything for the world.
I’m so happy and thankful to my coaches and the team around me, and all of my friends and family here.
I truly couldn’t have done it without them and it hasn’t been easy.

Probably a lot of relief. I was super nervous after the seeding, especially because it didn’t go how I imagined it was going.

No-one was coming next to me over the jump, I was like, ‘Holy crap, this is actually happening’.

WHAT A PERFORMANCE!!
Baff was only 17th after the first seeding round but then turned it on during the knockout stages.
She won her 1/8 final to reach the quarters, where she placed second.
Baff then triumphed in her semi before turning it on again in the Big Final!
That’s Australia’s second gold medal of the Milano Cortina Games, following Cooper Woods’s win in the men’s moguls on Thursday.

Clift bows out in quarterfinals
Mia Clift is unable to advance to the semis after finishing third in her quarterfinal.
It was a solid effort from Clift and she deserves to be proud of her efforts at the Milano Cortina Games.
Italy’s Michela Moioli won the quarterfinal ahead of Switzerland’s Noémie Wiedmer.

What a finish!
Baff just held off Switzerland’s Sina Siegenthaler to place second to Czech Eva Adamczyková.
Officials needed to go to the photo to split Baff and Siegenthaler, with the Aussie getting the nod after a nervous wait.
