There were several changes to Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game rosters Friday, as some prominent players decided not to participate and left spots open for others, including some first-time participants.

• Philadelphia Phillies ace Zack Wheeler, who would’ve been a candidate to start for the National League, will not participate Tuesday after getting named to the team for the third time. His spot went to San Diego Padres reliever Adrian Morejon, who has a 1.71 ERA in 45 appearances with two saves. The Padres are the first team to have three relievers named to an All-Star team in the same season, according to Elias Sports Bureau.

• Detroit Tigers starter Casey Mize will replace Boston Red Sox lefty Garrett Crochet, who leads the majors in strikeouts with 151. Mize has a 9-2 record with a 2.63 ERA for the team with the best record in baseball. He’ll start Saturday afternoon against the Seattle Mariners, and Crochet (9-4, 2.39 ERA) is scheduled to pitch against the Tampa Bay Rays a few hours later.

• New York Yankees starter Carlos Rodón will replace his teammate Max Fried on the American League’s All-Star roster. This is Rodón’s third time as an All-Star, as he made the AL roster in 2021 and the NL team in 2022 during his season with the San Francisco Giants. Fried was named an All-Star in three of the past four seasons. Fried, who signed with the Yankees in December after eight seasons with the Braves, could get a chance to face his former team, as the Yankees play in Atlanta next weekend in their first series after the All-Star break.

• Mariners outfielder Randy Arozarena will also replace a teammate, as he was named to the AL roster in place of Julio Rodríguez, who will use the break to rest and prepare for the rest of the season. Arozarena started slow this season but has picked up his production in recent weeks. He went into Friday with 15 homers, 15 steals and a 133 OPS+.

• The Los Angeles Angels’ only All-Star, Yusei Kikuchi, will not participate. His spot was filled by Rays starter Drew Rasmussen, who went into Friday’s start in Boston with a 2.82 ERA over 89 1/3 innings.

• The Kansas City Royals had two players named as All-Stars on Friday, with Maikel Garcia replacing Rays second baseman Brandon Lowe, and AL saves co-leader Carlos Estévez getting Texas Rangers starter Jacob deGrom’s spot.
