OPINION — The promise to prioritize deportation of immigrants with criminal records has devolved into broadly arresting undocumented immigrants with no criminal records in public spaces, going door to door without warrants, in some cases breaking down doors looking for undocumented immigrants, and in numerous cases, detaining U.S. citizens, even children.
The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that all people in our country are entitled to due process. Masked ICE agents refusing to present credentials and warrants while demanding papers is not due process.
ICE tactics of attacking peaceful protesters and in some cases killing peaceful protesters, allege those actions were justified, before any investigations of those killings. Videos later reveal the justification to be totally false!
ICE lies about their actions and calls victims terrorists. In Phoenix, ICE pepper-sprayed (from their vehicles) peaceful protesters standing on the sidewalk without cause!
It is estimated that between 50% and 75% of those undocumented detainees have no criminal record. Arresting anyone of color that might be suspected of being undocumented and detaining them with no due process, spreads fear among all of us, who is next to be grabbed off the street and detained? Is this making us safer?
And by the way, there is absolutely no evidence that any ICE protesters are being paid as alleged by Republicans and right-wing media.
